Mind & Social Event Recap: From Reactive to Grounded

This week, Mind & Social hosted an event “From Reactive to Grounded: Communication Under Stress” with Tracy Hall and Barbara Leahy—a conversation about something every leader experiences, but few of us are actually taught how to navigate:

What happens inside of us when the pressure rises?

As leaders, intensity comes with the territory. Come on… We have ALL experienced a difficult client, partner, colleague, employee right?…

And in those moments, our ability to stay grounded can become one of our greatest leadership superpowers.

Tracy and Barbara walked us through practical ways to recognize stress before we react to it—from breathing techniques that help regulate our nervous system, to noticing where we physically feel intensity in our bodies, to creating a little more space between what happens and how we respond.

One of our favorite reframes of the afternoon was incredibly simple:

“Is this an inconvenience…or is this a catastrophe?”

Because when we're under stress, our brains aren't always great at knowing the difference.

That pause gives us the opportunity to challenge the story we're creating, regulate the physical response happening in our bodies, and choose how we want to enter the conversation instead of allowing the intensity of the moment to choose for us.

And that matters enormously in leadership.

Leadership isn't about never becoming frustrated, overwhelmed, defensive, or emotional. It's about developing the awareness to recognize when those emotions are taking over—and learning how to come back to yourself before you lead from them.

The hard conversations aren't going away. Neither are demanding clients, complicated partnerships, unexpected problems, or moments when our teams need something difficult from us.

But we can change who we are inside of those moments.

Staying grounded in the midst of intensity isn't passive.

It's powerful.

And it may be one of the most important leadership skills we can develop.
